Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust

About Us

Our Trust is one of the largest acute trusts in the country and the biggest provider of acute healthcare services in NHS North East London and the City (NELC). Our dedicated workforce of 6,500 staff and volunteers serve our local population of around 750,000, from a wide range of social and ethnic groups.

We operate two Emergency Departments (ED) alongside other acute services. We cover all the major specialties of large district general hospitals as well as a joint Cancer Centre with Bart’s Health NHS Trust, a regional Neurosciences Centre, and a dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. General healthcare and cancer services are also provided to South West Essex, and specialist neurosciences services are provided to the whole of Essex, a population base of some 2.1 million.

We operate out of two main hospitals and a number of other centres.  King George Hospital is a modern local hospital), providing excellent acute and rehabilitation services to meet the needs of the residents of Redbridge and Barking, with a first class planned care center serving our whole catchment area. Queen’s Hospital is a premier acute hospital, providing complex care and specialist services for the population of outer North East London and Essex.  Queen’s Hospital is also the local hospital for the residents of Havering, Dagenham and Brentwood. Both sites provide high quality accommodation and have good transport links by road and public transport.

We are extremely proud that we recently secured a place on the ground-breaking Virginia Mason Institute Programme to transform the care we provide for patients. We are one of only five Trusts in the country selected to take part and our patients will greatly benefit from the systems that have led to Virginia Mason receiving awards for excellent and safe care. We are also one of eight new, national Vanguard sites, and part of the only one in London, which will help spearhead transformational change in urgent and emergency care.

In the last year we have restructured our management function, to strengthen both clinical leadership and the senior management team. Divisional Directors lead six divisions, supported by a Divisional Manager, Specialty Lead, Divisional Nurse and Specialty Manager.

The divisions are:
  • Acute Medicine
  • Specialist Medicine
  • Women and Child Health
  • Cancer and Clinical Support
  • Anaesthetics
  • Surgery

Our Hospitals

We run two hospitals - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also serve clinics across outer north east London and run some services from Barking Hospital.

In addition, we are proud to boast a regional neuroscience centre, renowned as a centre of excellence; a cancer centre; and a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at Queen’s to provide specialist care.

Our Services

We operate two Emergency Departments, one at each of our hospitals, and offer a full range of local hospital services.

This year we’ll be celebrating Queen’s Hospital’s 10th birthday so look out for news on how we’ll be marking the special occasion.

We are Smoke Free

Our hospital sites are smoke free. This means that visitors, patients and staff are not permitted to smoke on Trust grounds.

There is plenty of support is available if you would like to stop smoking.

Our partners

To provide the very best care to our patients, we work closely with our health and social care partners so that together, as one healthcare system, we work as efficiently and effectively as possible for the communities we serve.

As we are a university hospital we also work very closely with our academic partners.
