The Department of Oncology CancerControl Alberta, Alberta Health Services invites applications for a Medical Oncologist locum tenens position to start by May 1, 2018 (term of locum up to 2 years) with shared allocation of duties between Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) in Edmonton at 0.4 FTE and the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre (GPCC) in Grande Prairie at 0.6 FTE.

The successful applicant will join a team of multidisciplinary cancer programs and a team of Medical and Radiation Oncologists, Nurse Practitioners and other medical support staff in the Edmonton and North zones. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in local and provincial tumor team based activities including clinical case reviews at tumor board rounds, annual, provincial tumor team meetings, local quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.

CCI, Edmonton and GPCC, Grande Prairie, operate within a provincial framework for cancer care supported by provincial clinical guidelines and standards, focused on patient centered care.

CCI is a free-standing integrated cancer treatment and research facility that functions as the tertiary oncology referral centre for Northern Alberta. CCI is a leader in innovative cancer research, prevention, treatment, and care initiatives. This cancer centre sees both in- and out-patients, currently treating over 21,000 patients in one year.

GPCC is one of four Regional Cancer Centres within CancerControl Alberta’s Community Oncology portfolio. Serving Northern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia, cancer care practice at the GPCC is centered on 7 major tumor groups, with rarer tumors managed in conjunction with consultation and expertise from the tertiary centers in Edmonton and Calgary. The GPCC location is currently within the Queen Elizabeth II hospital. A new facility is being built, and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in the upcoming opening of the new GPCC within the new Regional Hospital in 2019.

Grande Prairie is an ever-growing community, which serves a trading area of over 281,000 people. It is the youngest community in Canada, with an exceptionally low median age of 30.3. Located 460km northwest of Edmonton, and approximately 120km from the British Columbia border, this community is active and vibrant year round. Grande Prairie, otherwise known as “The Swan City” due to its proximity to the summer nesting grounds of the trumpeter swan, has plenty of outdoor activities, including music and film festivals, a large “Stompede”, an annual rodeo, and is surrounded by scenic parks and lakes.

Qualifications:

Qualifications include an MD, certification in Internal Medicine, special competency in Medical Oncology (or equivalent), and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The candidate must also be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. They must read, write, and speak English fluently.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver excellent patient care and must be eligible for licensure in Alberta and must have obtained Fellowship in Medical Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada by the time of appointment.

Compensation:

CancerControl Alberta, Alberta Health Services offers an attractive compensation, benefits and relocation assistance package. The annual compensation will be calculated in accordance with the CancerControl Alberta Physician compensation grid for Medical Oncologists $314,781.00 - $453,117.00 dependent on qualifications, training and experience.

Based on the primary residence, the successful applicant may be eligible for Canada Student Loan forgiveness under the Federal Government program for family doctors and nurses. The successful applicant may also be eligible for the Federal Government’s Northern Resident Deduction, as Grande Prairie is included in the prescribed intermediate zone.
