The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) has a unique and exciting opportunity for a Band 6 nurse to start develop their career in clinical research and GI nursing. This unique joint role will enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in both of these exciting areas. 

We are dedicated to providing high quality, patient centred, clinical research at Southampton, which is a major centre of excellence.  UHS is a designated major trauma centre providing specialist and state-of-the-art patient care.

Within these environments, you will join enthusiastic, driven and caring teams in a friendly, professional working environment.   The Research team is composed of researchers from hospital and university backgrounds, working in collaboration with the Gastroenterology service with the aim to deliver a variety of studies to improve patient care and outcomes.  You will be one of five Gastroenterology Nurse Specialists  working closely with the multidisciplinary team . The nursing service includes  a telephone advice line, virtual cliinic, transitional clinic and the opportunity to attend the nurse led clinics , review both inpatients and outpatients.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic nurse who is organized, self-motivated and aspires to further their career in Clinical Research and Gastroenterology nursing.  You will ideally have experience of clinical research or GI Nursing.   Full Research training will be given and you will be involved in all aspects of the research process from study start-up, recruitment and delivery, to closure of a study.  You will need to have an excellent level of written and verbal communication skills. Good IT skills, telephone skills and the ability to project manage and problem-solve in order to guide and support the team would also be advantageous.  You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, implementing studies to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes.  A positive attitude, enthusiasm, self-motivation, flexibility and drive will be required to ensure the success of these posts.

These posts represent an excellent training opportunity. You will work jointly with the research team and the Gastroenterology team with 50% of your time working clinically within Gastroenterology and the remaining time will be clinical research activity.  You will be trained in research study delivery and clinical assessments, treatments and care of patients with Gastrointestinal disorders, including Coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.  We have close links with the University of Southampton, and you will be based at University Hospital Southampton.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
