Responsibilities/Duties:

The ideal candidate will offer their skills and expertise in providing contact and continuous care toward the management of patients' health.

The successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or by opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence in the community of McLennan.
  • Establish and maintain a full time community based practice within the community.
  • Provide call support as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Emergency Department and other call schedules as required.
  • Contribute to and participate in teaching programs and activities.
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities as assigned.

About the Community of Mclennan:


The community of McLennan is one of four communities in the Smoky River Area and is located on the threshold of the Mighty Peace Country about 400 kilometers northwest of Edmonton, Alberta.

ECONOMY:
The communities in the Region offer a full variety of modern commercial and administrative facilities and small business enterprises. A wide range of products and services are available in a friendly “small town” atmosphere. Attractive stores, modern banking facilities and state-of-the-art health care facilities are all within the area.

COMMUNITIES:
There are four major communities in the Smoky River area, each with its own unique characteristics.

Donnelly is the site of the Annual Smoky River Agricultural Fair and enjoys a strategic location adjacent to the airport, railroad and junction of main highways. It also holds the area’s junior/senior high school as well as an arena and baseball diamond. Donnelly also has a fire department. Population: 421.

Falher is the Honey Capital of Canada and is the thriving service centre for the enormous agricultural industry in the area. It has recently added the Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Terminal to its small town. It also has the largest bee in the World!! For recreation, Falher has an outdoor swimming pool, library, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a giant slide, golf course, ski hill, ice arena, curling rink and parks. Falher has its own fire department, and is a large participant in minor hockey. As the largest community in the Smoky River region, Falher also serves as the major retail centre for area residents. Population: 1,172.

Girouxville boasts two of the most prominent cultural features in the Peace Country. The Girouxville Museum is the largest museum north of Edmonton and has received wide acclaim while the grotto of our Lady of Lourdes has served as a religious pilgrimage destination for almost half a century. Girouxville has a baseball diamond, bowling alley, community hall and outdoor skating rink to add to its strong cultural atmosphere. Low housing costs make Girouxville an attractive place to live. Population: 349.

McLennan is situated on the south shore of Kimiwan Lake and the Region’s centre for health and social activities. The Kimiwan Bird Walk (a bird sanctuary) is located at the intersection of the Mississippi, Pacific and Central Flyways (migration paths) of birds, offering a unique opportunity to observe many species. McLennan is also the home of the Smoky River area RCMP and has baseball diamonds, ice arena, tennis court and golf course. Service clubs include: Legion and Order of the Royal Purple. Population: 840.

EDUCATION:
The community of Smoky River offers Kindergarten to Grade 6 in Falher and Grade 7 to Grade 12 in Donnelly, both being public schools. French Families have the opportunity to send their children to a French school from Grades 1-12 at Ecolé Heritage in Falher. McLennan has a separate school offering Kindergarten to Grade 9 and Cyber High. The Northern Lakes College in McLennan provides continuing education for persons age 17 or older and out of school for one year.

SENIORS HOUSING:
Manoir du Lac is located in McLennan which houses continuing care, designated assisted living and supportive living residents. There are two Senior Apartments in McLennan and one in Falher. The Villa Beausejour (lodge) in Falher provides senior residential accommodation where all the services are provided for its residents.

COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES: The Smoky River Area offers a variety of medical support - Physicians, Dentists, Pharmacists, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, diabetic/cardiac rehab, dietitians, and mental health. Public and Community Health services are also available.

Qualifications:

  • Registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) or proof of Eligibility for Alberta Licensure required (to be sent with application).
  • Must have experience in a rural community setting within the past 1-2 years.
  • Core Competencies:
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – desired
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – required
    • CCFP – desired
    • CCFP-EM – desired
  • Additional Competencies:
  • Emergency Room Experience – required
  • Preference will be given to applicants who do not require or have completed the CPSA Preliminary Clinical Assessment.

Compensation:

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside in this community of $32275.33 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 29.98% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
