We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Macmillan therapy technical instructor to join our cancer care therapy team here at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) in the regional oncology centre. This is a new role, fixed term for 18 months and involves working functionally with cancer patients on the wards with neurological presentations such as spinal and brain involvement.  

Our therapy technical instructors work independently and alongside physiotherapists, occupational therapists and ward based multi-disciplinary teams.  We are a large foundation trust and teaching hospital with many excellent regional centres including the regional oncology centre, and will have the opportunity to develop excellent discharge planning skills to facilitate a safe and timely discharge of service users, with the support of qualified staff.

The integrated therapy services department is a lively, friendly and dynamic department, which has over 190 staff.  University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust (UHS) is a large teaching hospital and we strive to deliver a seamless service to its users, whilst actively promoting continuing professional development within the therapy department.  There are also many varied opportunities to participate in training and we will ensure that you complete your competency training to equip you with the competence and confidence within this post. 

 The successful applicants will need to have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills, demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills within a team, be able to demonstrate good problem solving skills and, an ability to motivate service users. This role requires you to be physically fit and active and able to physically carry, handle and fit adaptive equipment and manoeuvre patients. Experience working as part of a rehabilitation team is also essential criteria. Therapy services run a 7-day flexible working service so you need to be able to work weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
