Responsibilities

The Executive Director Medication Safety provides a leadership role in instituting models that promote medication safety in all aspects of the medication management process at WellStar Health System. The executive director establishes and executes the system vision and strategic plan and also serves as a resource for regulatory and medication safety for the organization. It is expected that the executive director stay abreast of medication safety activities at the national level through engagement with institutions such as American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and researches and advises on best practice solutions. The executive director will work in partnership with the hospitals and ambulatory locations to identify and help address their medication management needs.

The Executive Director consolidates and administers the overall business plan and budget for the Medication Safety Services department. Serves as the spokesperson for the department and is generally recognized as the subject matter expert. Drives results through effective hiring practices, sound management philosophy, and measurement/management of key performance indicators.

Qualifications

RequiredMinimumEducation:

Pharm. D required from an accredited School/College of Pharmacy preferred.

OR

Baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy is required with an in-depth background in clinical pharmacy practice and systems design and analysis.

OR

Clinical background in nursing or medicine (MD, DO) with patient safety experience in an integrated healthcare system

Master of Business Administration or other equivalent advanced management degree strongly preferred.

Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) preferred.

RequiredLicensure: Licensed and in good standing with the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy required, or license eligible in the state of Georgia.

RequiredMinimumExperience:

A minimum of 10 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy or health system medication safety setting. Must possess solid experience in the development of programs focused on achieving positive outcomes in the use of medications. A minimum of 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy management or supervision of a pharmacy or medication safety program is preferred with a strong background in clinical pharmacy practice coupled with pharmacy operations responsibilities. A general or specialized pharmacy residency is preferred. Experience in an integrated health system is preferred.Experience in a matrix management environment involving integration of multiple entities, without direct authority or control is strongly desired. Possess substantial knowledge in project management, performance improvement, risk management principles, patient safety theory, and planning.

RequiredMinimumSkills: Demonstrated leadership qualities. Ability to supervise both professional and non-professional employees. Ability to work with other hospital and system managers, directors, executive directors and senior leadership. Ability to partner with external third-party plan administrators. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Strong customer service attitude. Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office). Ability to think/act independently as required by situation – adept at crisis management.
