Specialty Doctor in Histopathology

Specialty Doctor in Histopathology ( 1 year fixed term, renewable) x 2

Applications are invited for 2 x whole time Specialty Doctors in Histopathology (one year fixed-term, renewable). Applications for part-time and job-share will be considered. The successful candidates will be joining a department with eleven Consultant Histopathologists, a Clinician Scientist for immunohistochemistry/molecular pathology and a cut up team made up of two specialty doctors, 1 BMS Advance practitioner and 1 pathologists assistant.

This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering virtually every specialty except medical renal biopsies and paediatric/neonatal pathology. The Trust hosts the Essex Neurosciences centre, but reporting of neuropathology specimen has been outsourced since the single neuropathologist relocated two years ago.

There are approximately 34,000 surgical and 8,000 non gynaecological cytology specimen per year. Following centralisation of gynae cytology screening with introduction of primary HPV screening, the department will no longer receive such specimen from December 2919. The department however still supports breast and bowel cancer NHS screening programmes and is a major Cancer Centre for Essex.

Whilst BHR is not a major academic centre, the cellular pathology department has a strong desire to keep abreast of modern trends/recent developments so as to remain in a position to offer patients the best service possible within the limits of available resources. The Specialty Doctor in Histopathology posts are newly established posts that have been designed to help the department achieve this goal. The plan is for the post holders to play a key role in ensuring that the department quickly adopts practically useful advances in from such areas as international pathology, digital pathology and molecular pathology/genomic medicine. The post holders will contribute to a thriving culture of clinically relevant audit and quality improvement as well as full participation of the department in relevant projects in the Trust’s Research and Development unit.

At least 25% of the potholder’s time will be protected for the above purposes, whilst 75% of their time will be devoted to clinical service needs thus ensuring that they have a proper practical grounding for the aforementioned activities. The clinical service needs will comprise principally of being part of the surgical ‘cut-up’ team which presently comprises two specialty doctors, one advanced practitioner and one pathologist assistant. Another key service commitment for the post holder will be to assist consultant histopathologists in producing a final histopathology report by pre-screening slides and initial drafting of the reports. Some limited independent reporting may be available for interested candidates.

These posts are particularly suited for individuals who have just passed FRCPath part II finals but are not yet ready to take up a consultant post or for individuals who are working toward the FRCPath part II finals outside the formal pathology training program.

We have a fantastic laboratory with excellent immunohistochemistry facilities. Over 90% of routine (NICE recommended) molecular testing such as EGFR, PD-L1, KRAS, NRAS and Her2 - ISH testing are done in-house.

The successful candidate must hold GMC registration, Part I FRCPath or its equivalent and be able to provide evidence for a minimum of 2 years’ experience in diagnostic histopathology.
