The Director of Surgical Services is a registered professional nurse who functions under the direction of the Hospital Administrator and is responsible for providing leadership and directing all activities/services for a large department or multiple departments. The Director has responsibility for ensuring standards of practice, system and department policies and procedures, and
ensuring quality patient care. Other responsibilities include ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements by all departmental personnel. The Director is responsible for financial performance, human and material resource management, patient/customer satisfaction, appropriate reporting, and coordination of departmental functions with the operations of other hospital departments to assure quality services at a reasonable cost for patients. The Director serves as chief retention officer for his/her assigned unit(s).
Based on expanded educational knowledge and clinical expertise and experience, he/she is responsible for directing safe delivery of age appropriate and culturally aware nursing care practices that address the biological, developmental, psychosocial, cultural and clinical needs of the patient and/or family or support system. The Director creates and maintains an environment that enables the system to fulfill its mission and goals and fosters communication and collaborative practice with physicians and other departments. It is expected that all nurse leaders are licensed, knowledgeable and uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and implements the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association. As a member of the patient services team, it is expected the individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
Required Minimum Education:
Must hold either a Master’s Degree in Nursing or Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) from accredited nursing schools with a Master’s Degree in related field.
Required Minimum Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse, actively licensed in the state of Georgia. National certification in nursing administration or clinical specialty preferred. Must have a current BLS card from the American Heart Association on the first day of employment in position.
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 total years of experience as a Registered Nurse; includes 3-5 years of progressive operational leadership in an assistant manager or manager role.
Required Minimum Skills:
Should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and relationship building; a knowledge of the health care environment; leadership that includes such skills as successfully implementing and managing a change process – ability to use systems thinking- and inspire, coach others to be successful; model the way for professional practice; professionalism and teamwork/collaboration for self/department/medical staff; and possess necessary business skills to manage human and material resources. Must be a continuous learner who understands health care financing; strategy and operations for running a business unit(s); and effectively employ data and technology to support work processes and make decisions. Supports shared governance or shared decision making; manage the design and delivery of care that in based on evidence and focused on quality and safety. Knowledge of risk management and various accreditation/regulations/licensing requirements assuring that these are upheld while advancing industry standards through the achievement of goals by effective management and measurement of outcomes.
