Engineering Manager - Infrastructure & DevOps

Our client is looking to appoint an Engineering manager to lead its Infrastructure and DevOps team

Our engineering team is structured into small pods of three to eight engineers, each led by a pod lead. For this role you will oversee our three person Infrastructure Team, supporting team members and ensuring the successful execution of their projects and operations.

The Infrastructure team within the business owns our AWS infrastructure and deployment pipelines, along with being the point team for security issues and most DevOps efforts, though our on-call rotations include both product engineers along with infra engineers.

While your primary responsibility will not be writing critical path code, as the team is still relatively small you will spend a good chunk of your time initially doing hands-on work in addition to providing technical leadership and people management for the team. You achieve results not through micromanagement, but rather by empowering your team and helping them to run autonomously to deliver great work. You are a people manager who cares about the well-being and growth of your engineers, you have experience coaching your team members to success and developing their careers. You have extensive experience working with cloud providers, ideally AWS and working in a dockerized environment.

This position reports to the CTO.

Responsibilities

  • Manage 3-6 engineers building out and maintaining our production and development infrastructure as we shift away from a monolithic codebase to a more complex environment and
  • Lead successful development and delivery of team projects and operations
  • Mentor direct reports, provide performance feedback and help them develop their careers.
  • Provide project management for infrastructure initiatives (this pod does not have a PM)
  • Build out our security capabilities within the business
  • We currently have an in-house bug bounty program, but no solid overarching threat model to evaluate security risks against and spotty playbooks for handling incidents.
  • Partner with engineering leadership & product teams to help determine engineering team strategy, tackle team-wide inefficiencies, and support feature initiatives on product engineering
  • Monitor & control our infrastructure costs

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of DevOps/infrastructure engineering experience, with 2+ years of combined technical leadership and people management.
  • Previously led a team of 3 or more engineers
  • Extensive experience working in a Cloud environment (AWS/GCP/Azure), deploying high traffic applications worked on by at least medium sized teams (20+ engineers).
  • Experience building out a security function within a software company, bonus points for experience in the payments or site builder space.
  • Proficient at project management; can make the right tradeoffs to ship projects on time with high quality
  • Experience mentoring individual contributors of different seniority levels and expertise
  • Experience working with other engineering teams within a company to support their initiatives from an infrastructure and DevOps perspective

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive health benefits with options covering up to 100% of monthly premiums
  • Discretionary vacation & time off with a company average of 24 days a year
  • Parental leave, 16 weeks, fully paid after 3 months of service
  • 401(k) with match after 3 months of service
